Is every French summer bar a real guinguette?
French people are epicureans, it is well known. Living like God in France, you know? But they are also picky. They don't call a summer bar a guinguette, if it's not a guinguette ... Then it's just a summer bar.
French people are fussy about their guinguettes. There's the superficial check: no permanent infrastructure, everything disappears in winter. And the tables and chairs don't come from a designer store or from a flat-pack, they prefer to look a little vintage, they don't quite fit into the same set, the effect is multicolored ... Like the tablecloths, red and white checkered, that genre.
But beyond the looks, there are the more important issues. Does the summer bar provide culture? Free or reasonably priced concerts, circus acts or participatory art? Is everyone welcome there? All ages, every rank and file, every background or belief? Then, and only then, is the French summer bar in question ... a guinguette!
