With an eye on tomorrow (NOS - NPO Radio 1)

It is a fixture on NPO Radio 1: since 1976 this program has been bringing an overview of the news and morning papers at the end of the day. Each day has its own presenter. In his or her own way, they bring interviews on current affairs, interspersed with cultural topics so that the delusion of the day becomes a bit more digestible. For the impatient reader: listen immediately to the excerpt about guinguettes....

Presenter of the day: Elisabeth Steinz

Since "guinguettes" are more than ordinary summer bars, this topic landed on the editor's table. On Friday I received a phone call: whether I was up for an interview on Saturday at the studio in Hilversum? "Is that possible for you?", the editor-in-chief asked. "Sure!", I replied confidently, because with the Dutch you should never hesitate. "Then we will book a hotel room for you, because otherwise it will be very late for you to drive so far back."

That hotel room was no luxury. Because this program goes live on air "at the end of the day. That is, between 11 p.m. and midnight. You immediately ask yourself the question: so late? Is it listened to then? Who are those listeners?

These are nurses on night shift, drivers cutting through the darkness, people crawling into bed with their radio,.... The program has been around for almost fifty years; by comparison, "The Appointment" on Canvas is a youngster. It is a fixed value, with fixed rituals. At the beginning and end, we hear "Gute Nacht, Freunde" by Reinhard Mey. All these years, every broadcast was introduced by the same voice. Until the 86-year-old owner of that voice called it quits last year and the editors and listeners reluctantly embraced a new voice.

But now back to "Met het oog op morgen" of April 12. A broadcast about American lawyers and Holland's energy policy. With pop journalist and music critic Gijsbert Kamer 's vinyl records as moody interludes. And the guinguettes as a bouncer. On a cultural level a rather analogous broadcast. And a nice moment of recognition for this exquisite piece of French culture, which you can listen to again here.

Guinguettes make you happy, you can tell. And considering the 9 minutes of airplay, we turn a blind eye to the typesetting errors in the blue block above ;-) Fortunately, we had created a Dutch URL especially for this broadcast (listen until the end of the clip).
